“SILK STOCKING BANDITS”

Mob Stories

In the 1950s and 1960s a gang of ruthless bandits traveled throughout the country, robbing, killing and maiming people without conscious. In 1978 their leader, Ray Ferritto, a hit man from Erie Pennsylvania along with a local gangster from Youngstown,Ohio set off a bomb in the parking lot of his dentist office. The bomb was in a car parked next to the Irishman, Danny Green’s car. Green was killed instantly as he opened the door .

Green belonged to the Longshoreman’s Union and was trying to muscle in on the Cleveland Syndicate. . The bomb was so intense that a gold cross Green wore around his neck was found embedded in the blacktop of the parking lot were the bombing took place. A car was was observed speeding from the scene by a young artist parked at a red light  at the time. She  drew a sketch of the driver and gave it to a family member of the police force. The sketch  identified the driver as a Ray Ferritto.  When the Police went to Erie Pa. and searched Ferritto’s home, they found the title and registration of the car used in the bombing. Ferritto later turned himself after hiding out in Youngstown.

While under indictment, the Cleveland mob headed by Jack White put out a contract on him; when Ferritto found out, he went into the Witness Protection program and  testified against Jack White and the mob. Over 18 men were indicted causing the Cleveland Syndicate to be dismantled. Two years later Ferritto left the Witness Program ,  and told the FBI, IF THE MOB WANTS ME, LET THEM COME AND GET ME. In 2004 an article appeared in the local newspaper saying Florid dies at his home in Florida at the age of 75. The mob never came to get him
